Hugs

I read once that to function normally a person needs at least 4 hugs a day. I have no idea how scientifically valid this is, but makes you think, doesn't it. How many of us can be sure to get as much as one a day? Although I imagine that one long warm hug would outweigh a bunch of quick casual ones, so it's not all that much about the number of them.

We exchanged a few sentences about that today with Jari and Laura, and I decided to see what there is on the net about hugs. I found this page: http://eqi.org/hugs.htm Go on and read if you're interested. :)

Oh yes, and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r7DYUlDuoM

I was interested and checked out the site, but i as a debater can see that the site isn't scientifficaly very valid, who is that person anyway and the writing was so üldsõnaline(how is it in english again?) that it couldn't make any logical sense what so ever... Yea, sorry about the rant but... you know.

*nods* I didn't really find anything scientific about this on the net, although maybe I'd need to know how and where to look for that. That page was an interesting read for me, though, food for thought etc. I think the author was focusing more on emotions than logic. Did it make any emotional sense? :)

Well, let's have a look at it logically, starting from personal empirical observation.

The number of hugs in my personal experience is much closer to 'four times every life' than 'four times every day'.
Therefore, we would expect that I do not function normally.

The verb 'function' is a bit tricky. What precisely does it mean? However, given the fact that I and '(insert any verb) normally' are a statistically unlikely combination, this could still be true.
Very well; let us broaden the range a bit.

Let us assume that the majority of people in the world do not get four hugs every day. I think this is the case, but I might be wrong.
If this assumption is correct, then according to the hypothesis you stated, the vast majority of people do not function normally.
So what does the word 'normal' mean, then?
No, I really don't think it's true...

P.S. Anyone who would accept a hug from a total stranger, and a weirdo who walks with a 'Free Hugs' sign besides, is probably not very normal...

P.P.S. I completely and 'warmly' (smile) agree 'that one long warm hug would outweigh a bunch of quick casual ones, so it's not all that much about the number of them.'
